3 Steps to Create Engaging Instagram Posts

If you’re like me, you love Instagram. You love soaking in the photos of beautiful destinations & charming towns, connecting with friends (new & old) from across the world, and getting insight into brands I wouldn’t have otherwise gained access to. Instagram has been around since 2010 (turning 10 this month!) and didn’t get popular until 2012. The platform has evolved quite a bit since then—I encourage you to scroll back to your very first post; it’s a guaranteed good time.

If you’re reading this and possibly don’t understand the value Instagram can add to your business, read on. It’s not enough to JUST have a website these days.

As a business, having an online presence is key for a few reasons:

  1. It humanizes the business. People want to see the human behind of the business. They love your brand and want to know how to runs—aka. how you do what you do!

  2. It helps draw in new customers. Imagine for a second—you’re walking past a cute storefront on your street that looks super cute inside. They’re closed so you can’t go in to check them out—where’s your next step? Online. I don’t know about you, but in the order of importance for me, it’s Instagram (first), Website (second), Facebook (third). If they don’t have an Instagram (strike 1), Website, but basically a landing page (strike 2), Facebook, but nothing has been posted since 2018 (strike 3)—I’m out. Chances of me coming back when they’re open? Zilch. Social Media is that powerful.

Now, let’s say this store, and really any business, in this scenario, has an Instagram with great photos. They’re posting consistently (~3x week) and have great, engaging captions? I’m SO in. Usually, within the first 20 seconds of being on a page—a customer knows whether they want to buy into whatever a business is selling. You could be selling a cute little boutique hotel or you could be selling your own personal lifestyle brand—either way, presence on Instagram is a must if you want to grow your business organically.

  3. It helps convert sales. Whatever your product or service may be, showcasing how you can add value to a customer’s life and what benefit you can add will turn them into followers and customers for life. Simply posting pictures of a pizza you’re selling and saying: ‘Yum’ #pizza, will not get a customer to reach out to find out where you’re located asking how do I get that in my belly?!

Let me share with you a few things I overheard in the past few weeks; further proof there’s still room for growth out there in many business owners!

“I use my creativity on my business, and don’t have much left spend on being creative with my online marketing.”

“How do I get more people to engage with me or have a conversation on Instagram?”

“I have great photos, but don’t know what to write for a caption.”

Any of these sound like you?

I got you!

If you are…

here’s the three parts of a caption to include WHEN POSTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

  • Hook: Using engaging words at the beginning of a caption to entice your audience to read more

  • Insights: Serve your audience with what they need to hear

  • Call to Action: Invite them to comment, send a direct message, like the post, etc. to build lasting relationships (and engagement!)
